Diego Flores has already been introduced, he is the new coach of Gimnasia, he will replace Fernando Zaniratto on the bench this Thursday but last month it was Marcelo Méndez Russo who was making the decisions at Lobo. Just two weeks after his departure, he told his truth and gave his reasons for resigning. He coached 32 games, although of the last 17 he only won two (Atlético Tucumán and Newell's), lost nine and drew the rest. Two goals in the final 10 games under his tenure, conceding at least one in the last five.
"The calendar, the reinforcements that did not arrive in time and form... we could not convey the idea. We reorganized the entire squad. It is quite complicated," he said. "The results were an important factor, it is a combination of things, that plus the transfer period and some positions that we could not reinforce, caused my departure," he added.
In an interview with Sport 890, the Uruguayan coach, from the comfort of his home, spoke to the press for the first time after resigning on Thursday, January 30, just hours after losing to San Lorenzo at El Bosque. "They brought us here to play in a certain way and the way the team was set up was making it quite difficult for us, and we didn't want to betray our way of feeling the game," he said.
"It was difficult to have to win and play so often, every three days, with a new squad," he reiterated. "Between one year and the next, 12 or 13 players left. The urgency of winning and playing every three days was complicated," he explained. And on the subject of Abaldo, he showed that he was not up to the task of dealing with him: "I don't know what he has, but all I want is for him to be happy. I found out at a dinner that he was not at the training camp and I never realized what was wrong with him."
Despite the negative points, I consider that his time at Gimnasia was "positive." "Living the experience as a coach in Argentina is good. There were several factors, results, we were not reaching the team as we wanted and they brought us to play in a certain way but it was difficult," he added. And he concluded: "We made the right decision at the right time."
